sie kennen Deutsch!
I went to the library at school today to look for some German text-books. When I went up to the counter to ask the librarian if she had anything, she said “I believe we do, let me check…-begins typing- ……..well, we do have so-and-so, but it’s been checked out…….” at this point, she stops typing, looks up at me and asks “Sprechen Sie Deutsch?” It took me a second to realize what she was asking, but “Do you speak German?” finally hit me in the face and then I replied “Ein..kleine…” (I was trying to say “a little”) rather unsurely. Then this guy who was walking past me just up and said “‘Ein bitte’ you mean.” I was like “Whoa….everyone here knows German. 0_0″ Well, after that I managed to find myself two books. One was published in 1964, but it has a good format to it. Looks like it has some good exercises in it too. The librarian found some marks in it and said they don’t usually keep marked books, so I’m hoping maybe she’ll let me keep it. I’ve been trying to add a new verb every night to my vocabulary and all of its present tense conjugations. I’m hoping to get some of the grammar under my belt with these two books so I can begin using Deutsch more confidently.
Surprisingly enough, I’ve told a few people around here that I’ve started studying German, and a good handful of them say they wish they knew it. Most are of German descent or either had relatives that fought in WWII and picked some up while stationed there. It almost makes me want to start up a German conversation group…the thing is, I dunno if anyone would show up for it though. Still, it would be pretty cool if I could actually find a few people that were interested enough so that we could meet at one of the restaurants in town and just converse the best we can in German once or so every week. I may keep that on the back-burner for later. =o
